As Mahishasuramardhini Devi killed the buffalo demon mahisha on Navami and restored peace and prosperity on the universe it is treated as Maharnavami.

Mahishasura mardhani is known for the slayer of Mahishasur. So people honor this day as divine mother’s win on bad evil.
It is the most furiously form of goddess Durga which is the warrior aspect of divine mother. Durga Devi is famous as Mahishasura Mardhani after the victory against Mahishasura. On that day we have celebrated as Maharnavami.
About Mahishasura Mardhani
On the day of ‘chandi saptasati’, it is stated Sri Mahalakshmi Devi with ‘ashthadasa bhujas’ (eighteen hands) killed Mahishasura, and this indicates in the same form at Indrakeeladri. After a mean while, she popularly became as Kanaka Durga. She riding on a lion and carrying weapons with her ten arms were given by Gods and maintaining a peace of smile on her beautiful face.
Mahishasura Mardhini is the alankaram, which shows that the powers of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheswara and armed with different kinds of weapons fought furiously for nine days. After the defeat of Indra by Mahishasura, his behavior became very bad on devatas. Then all devatas who were suffered, went to Siva and Kesava along with and Brahma begging them to save them from tortures of Mahishasura.
An enormous beam of light emerged out of all the angry devas and took the form of a woman.
Every Deva gave his power to her. Goddess Durga killed Mahishasura’s warriors Chikshurudu, Chamarudu, Udrudu, Bhashkuludu, Bidaludu and others.
