Diwali Cracker Shops Must have Licence, says Commissioner


Diwali Crackers in Vijayawada: Diwali 2017 festival of lights is coming up which falls on October 19 and our city police department is focusing on firecracker vendors and warehouse operations. They said that license under the Explosives Act has to be obtained by those who want to sell and store crackers here. In a press meet, Gautam Sawang (Police Commissioner) said that they have taken steps to prevent the illegal sale of crackers. Selling and storing crackers without a valid license is unlawful and people should desist from buying crackers from illegal outlets, he said.

Vijayawada Municipal Corporation has invited applications from traders those who fulfill guidelines and wish to establish cracker shops at the PWD Grounds (Swarajya Maidan) ahead have to apply for a temporary license on or before October 16. The wholesale dealers must renew their licenses at the earliest.

Last year, the officials had allotted for the sale of fireworks at Bhavani Ghat near Swathi Theater. However, the change of venue from Swarajya Maidan to Bhavani Ghat caused trader to end up in losses. And also it leads, according to the public to buy crackers has to put extra effort and travel an extra mile.

This year 2017, the VMC has decided to allow fireworks sale in the centrally located Swarajya Maidan (PWD Ground) which had hosted the mega sale event for the past few decades.

Diwali Stalls Safety Measures

As per the police norms fire safety measures.

Each shop should keep two fire extinguishers and 200 liters water stored in a barrel as precaution and two fire water buckets with sand.

Fireworks safely stored in a shed made of non-flammable material, which is closed, secured so as to away from entry by unauthorised persons.

The stalls should be at a distance of at least 3 meters from each other and they should also not face each other.

Moreover, oil burning lamps, gas lamps should not be used.

Electrical lights, if used should be fixed to the wall or ceiling and should not be suspended by flexible wire.

The display of fireworks is not allowed within 50 meters of any stall.
