SRM University AP: President of ‘SRM University,’ P Sathyanarayanan, on Wednesday (Nov 13) announced the setting up of School of Liberal Arts and Basic Sciences (SLABS) at its campus in Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh. SLABS at SRM University AP, Amaravati has been launched yesterday with a view to providing better education, not just a degree and while they follow their passions, interests and ambitions. The launching ceremony took place at The Gateway, Vijayawada.

School of Liberal Arts and Basic Sciences: SRM University, Amaravati introduces School of Liberal Arts and Basic Sciences (SLABS). SLABS at SRM offers a “multidisciplinary undergraduate programme” by exposing students to many different perspectives in and out of the classroom.

Rather than restricting students to courses in a particular discipline such as Economics or Physics or Commerce, SRM’s SLABS allows students to take courses across disciplines such as Physical and Natural Sciences, Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences.

Programs Offered and Course Structure

SRM Amaravati School of Liberal Arts and Basic Sciences beginning its first batch in 2018, will offer B.A., B.B.A., B.Com and B.Sc. programs across 12 departments.

B.A in English, Ph.D

B.A in History, Ph.D

B.A in Journalism, Ph.D

B.A in Psychology, Ph.D

B.ScB.Sc in Biology, Ph.D

B.Sc in Chemistry, Ph.D

B.Sc in Computer Science, Ph.D

B.Sc in Mathematics, Ph.D

B.Sc in Physics, Ph.D

Program duration: 3 years + 1 additional year (optional) resulting in a Diploma/Certificate.

SLABS and the program structure

Sathyanarayanan made this announcement in presence of Honorary Pro-Chancellor of SRM University, Amaravati, Prof Nicholas Dirks (Chancellor Emeritus, University of California, Berkley), and Pro-Vice-Chancellor D. Narayana Rao.

“Today, we face increasingly complex issues and challenges and tackling these calls for multi-dimensional thought processes and problem-solving skills. Education needs to focus on this and much more. We aim to help students develop such skills through the Liberal Arts and Basic Sciences education offered at SRM SLABS,” said Sathyanarayanan.

“Students will learn the skills of critical thinking and knowledge creation in a range of fields in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. They will have an innovative multi-disciplinary education, in close proximity as well to breaking new teaching and research in areas ranging from machine learning and data science to public policy and social analysis,” said Prof Dirks.
